New Year's Resolutions for Photographers...

If you've already abandoned the idea of resolutions by the second day of January you're probably beyond helping. If not, here we go...

  1. Take more pictures. Ansel Adams warned against being a scattershot who clicks away at everything. But it's a lot better to take too many images than too few. Keeping shooting and shooting.
  2. Pretend you don't have Photoshop. Whenever you take a shot, pretend you won't be able to do anything to it in post. No cropping. No adjustments. No fancy filters. Nothing. What you see is what you get. If you think this way all the time you won't just end up with a lot more keepers, you'll save countless hours of computer fiddling.
  3. Specialize. I once knew an actress who had a bit part in a television series. Her character was killed off with a broken neck. Years later I saw the same actress on CSI. Who did she play? The dead person of course, a murder victim who died by having her neck broken! Yes, being typecast as an actor sucks. But as the great Peter Yang has pointed out, being typecast as a photographer isn't so bad. If you specialize enough in 'x', when people want 'x' they'll call you.
  4. Work out. This is a very generic-seeming resolution, however it's a good one for photogs too. Cartier-Bresson used to work out so that he could keep his camera as still as possible. Unless you always shoot off a tripod keeping in shape can really help, not just when it comes to keeping your camera still but also if you need to climb, twist or bend to get that great, never-to-be-forgotten shot.
  5. Take care of your gear. There's a lot of little things that are easy to do which many photographers don't do. Don't swap lenses and flashes while your camera is on. Be careful when bringing your camera in from a cold day to a heated room. Read your manual. Be gentle. You'd be amazed how long stuff will last.

Also, eat less chocolate. (Sorry, that one's just for me.)
